Functional Neurology

Functional-Neurology

Functional Neurology is a diagnostic and treatment method of the nervous system. Functional Neurology was created by chiropractors therefore, it takes a holistic approach to healing. Since every person and brain is different, each program is customized to their needs, wants, and goals. Some functional neurologists take a nutritional approach that looks more like functional medicine, while some take a rehabilitation approach that looks more like physical or occupational therapy.

The nervous system is one of the only systems in the body that keeps track of and controls all the organs in your body. The endocrine system (our hormones) and immune system are the only other two systems that also do that. Although they are still considered three distinct systems, the reality is that there is constant communication between them.

Functional Neurology is based on the principle that the nervous system needs 3 things to survive: fuel, oxygen, and activation. Nutritional approaches generally focus on fuel, while rehabilitation approaches focus more on activation. The nervous system needs ample fuel and oxygen for activation, which is why the nutritional component cannot be neglected.

Functional Neurology rehabilitation is based on the principle of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain's ability to change throughout our entire lives based on environmental, emotional, and physical stimuli. The brain can be activated through our many senses including, sight, smell, hearing, balance, and touch. This activation can result in long term positive changes by influencing neurotransmitter systems and promoting new connections within the brain.
